The TimeBank has been working with the Lifelong Learning Institute at Virginia Tech to explore the possibility of hosting a short series of classes on basic home repair and maintenance. The target audience is older adults who are 'aging in place' and would like to develop their knowledge and skills in this area, with the goal of having a well-maintained home that they can enjoy for years to come.
We are hoping to tap into the wealth of knowledge that our TimeBank community holds and develop a framework where our members can share their skills in a hands-on classroom environment. Our goal is to have 3 classes, and these could be taught by a group, or individually by topic. If you have basic skills that you would be willing to share in any of the following areas we would love to get you involved:
- electrical (basic)
- plumbing (toilet and sink repair)
- wall repairs/painting
- HVAC (how and when to change the filter, when to replace the system, etc)
- appliance maintenance
- seasonal/outdoor maintenance
The classes would be happening in the spring of 2022, but we need to hear from potential instructors now to gauge interest, as the class schedule will be published soon. All participants will be paid in Tiime Credits for planning and instructional time spent. Please send me your thoughts or questions, and definitely let me know if you are interested in participating!
