Habitat of the NRV and the New River Valley TimeBank are going to be hosting a Repair Cafe on October 14th at the Habitat ReStore in Christiansburg. For the last few generations our culture has been moving away from building quality consumer goods that are meant to be repaired. We are just throwing things away and getting new ones. This phenomenon is called the throwaway economy and is an environmentally unsound way of doing things.
The public is invited to bring their broken household items to the event for diagnosis and hopeful repair. While there is no guarantee that the item can be repaired on site, there will be a team of skilled repairers who can identify problems and direct owners to reputable businesses that specialize in repairs. Repairs will be limited to small electrical appliances, furniture, sewing, IT and computer support and knife sharpening. There will also be an expo at the Repair Cafe to educate people about things they can do to have a more cost effective and environmentally conscious household.
The TimeBank will be looking for volunteers with skills in the afore mentioned areas as well as anyone who can help with administration. We are looking for anyone and everyone to come to and help with this fun event!
