Hello All,
I will be leading a beginner caving trip on Saturday June 10th. We will be meeting at 303 Wilson Ave. Blacksburg VA aka Wong Park. If you are interested in going you can email me at [email protected]. I would plan on being out of town for five or six hours. This will include drive time and time to get organized. You will need long pants and a long sleeved shirt. It is ~54 degrees F under ground in Virginia's caves all year round. You will also want sturdy boots or shoes with good tread. Assume that any clothing you wear under ground will be totally ruined and usable for nothing else ever again. A small bag to carry a snack and water is also a good idea but if you don't have anything like that I can throw a bunch of stuff in my cave pack. The VPI Cave Club will provide helmets and lights but you are more than welcome to bring your own if you are a rock climber or other such person.
There will be a fairly good climb up a hill to get to the cave and the cave it's self can be more than normally strenuous. I feel comfortable saying that if you can hike you can come with me on this trip. If you can't make this trip I will try to lead more of these trips over the summer and fall months so don't stress if you can't make this one. If you are already a caver with the VPI Club then you are more than welcome (in fact you are encouraged) to come along. You will receive a time credit for every hour spent under ground. If you are not a member or trainee of the VPI Cave Club then it will be one credit for every hour spent under ground. I estimate 3 hours and 4 max. Drive time will not be included because you don't need me to show you how to do that... hopefully. I can also offer driving lessons if that suits you though.
